Poor Internet Connection, why?

I am a student, living with 4 others who constantly need a strong and good internet connection which we are not getting. We are currently using TalkTalk and we have contacted them asking for their assistance but to no avail.

The router itself is located downstairs and it will allow us to connect but with a weak signal and very rarely can we use it without it losing connection or running ever so slowly.

Other than moving to a new provider, how else could we potentially fix this problem as TalkTalk might be cheap, but they are incredibly useless...?

you could buy a better router as the talktalk routers are not known for being very good, there are a lot of cheaper routers on the market that would be a lot better than the tt one, you will need a router with built in modem for the tt connection, check pc world, they do a good range of modem/routers and some are very good value, or you could use a wifi extender to bring a better signal upstairs
