How do I get an Internet connection for my laptop?
I got a laptop for Christmas and I was wondering how to set up my own Internet connection for it in my apartment. Do I need to purchase Internet service for it with a monthly fee or can I just buy a wireless router and have connection that won't drop?

You need internet provider in your country, a modem (depends will get it free after subscribe) & router (sometime you don't need a router as the modem already build in router).

I'm currently using a 3mbps plan @ S$30 per month & got free modem. Depends, you may want to subscribe faster speed plan. There is also a portability plan which use USB modem.

If you dont want to subscribe, you can share someone in your neighborhood internet connectivity to your laptop wifi, but you need password from them to access, or just hop in any free WIFI ZONE in your country. Sometimes when my dad lock modem internet access, i sneak in someone 'Unsecured' connectivity in my neighborhood, hehe..

Well if you want your OWN internet connection then you would need to order a service from your local cable company (cable internet) or phone company (DSL internet). Then purchase a wireless router, hook them all together and you will have wireless internet in your apartment. In some cases the internet service provider cuts you a break and supplies a free wireless router for you which is cool because it saves you a few bucks. In the mean time you can always look in the Wireless Networks section by your clock and see if there are any wireless networks available for you to connect to. They will have to be 'Unsecured'. But your best bet is just to order internet. Be prepared to spend some money. They usually go for about $50/month if you want good speeds.

One thing to determine is whether or not your laptop has a built in internet device. If you do you have a few options.

1. You can connect to other outside internet sources from your laptop for free but connection can sometimes drop or be impossible to connect to.

2. If you have a built in internet card then you can go to any wireless phone company and purchase a internet data plan.

If you do not have an internet card built into your laptop (most laptops these days all have them) you can go to a wireless phone company and purchase a external internet card and purchase a internet data plan. Internet data plans are a monthly fee and can over time be expensive but it is also good for accessing the internet when your on the go.

If you are not going to worry about accessing the internet on the go then you can setup your laptop at home either by using wifi or using internet from a cable company.

If you want to use wifi which the connection may or may not be that great and is not always reliable view your laptops manual on how to connect using your laptop.

To access the internet wireless on your laptop at your home you would have to purchase internet for your home and a wireless router and the cable company can walk you through setting up your wireless connection.
