Re arrange you partition if needed. I recommend two partition - one system drive (if windows being used it should be at least 60GB) and data partition.
If your laptop support EFI, then try install os in efi mode. you need to convert hdd into GPT scheme than MBR.
If you are interested in linux, allocate some space for it.

1) Use Internet explorer and download firefox or chrome.
2) Update windows
3) Get rid of bloatware on the laptop
4) Download and install your preferred Anti virus/firewall

Before any internet connection -
First check that it is all there.
Then check it works.
Be sure you are satisfied.
Yes, change the partitions if you need or want.

Set up your desktop wallpaper and stuff like that.
Get the firewall, antivirus and antimalware up and running the way you want it. And up to date.
You may need to go online for some of this.
Then check for any updates to the OS

Go to Piriform and download the latest (free) CCleaner. Use it.
Perhaps go to Windows Club (no relation to Microsoft) and get the (free) windows tweaker. Use it.
Go to majorgeeks or some such site, and find a (free) program that gets rid of the junk you inevitably get with a new machine. Use it. Here you can also find a neat program that will help you set up your windows firewall, if that is what you use.
I avoid Microsoft like the plague, but Windows defender is popular, and does the job well.

Download and/or install your favorite softwares

Do your email, facebook or whatever LAST.

Now - go have some fun.

Recommended (and free) -
CCleaner
Windows tweaker
Malwarebytes
Firefox
Free Download Manager
Smart Defrag 2

Sites -
Major Geeks
File Hippo
AfterDawn
Freeware files

Extras - 16 Gig USB key. External Hard Drive with own power supply. Mouse. Headphones. One of those little table things with the extra fans to help with cooling.

You might consider having a look at the instruction book!
