But they cost maybe $10 a year through many of the big registrars. |

Hi,
Sorry to sound like a broken record, but you can't get a high level domain name (ie a .Com) for free. What you need to research is which company offer the best overall package, and by that I mean which company offer a competitive price along with good customer support and ease of use. I would strongly recommend - GoDady.com and I use them for all my domain names. They are not the cheapest on the market but they are by far the best for customer service and the site is the simplest to navigate that I've found. Hope this has helped you..
