I also got this problem today. I did a ping on the URL, and then looked up the IP address - seems it's coming from the Czech Republic. For now, I added the URL to my hosts file, redirecting it back to 127.0.0.1, and then installed the free version of Process Blocker to block the 32-bit version of Internet Explorer from loading. The 64-bit version of Internet Explorer (which I also have available since I'm running 64-bit Windows 7) does not exhibit this behavior, which suggests to me that this is some kind of security flaw or exploit that affects only 32-bit Internet Explorer. Also, before I took these steps, I updated and ran Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, to be on the safe side.
EDIT: To edit the hosts file, if you're using Windows Vista or Windows 7, you must right click on Notepad and click Run as Administrator - simply opening Notepad and trying to edit the hosts file will not work without doing this. Then click File - Open, and in the File name box, open this file: C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts Scroll down to the bottom of the file, make a new line, and put these lines in: 127.0.0.1analytics.youradexchange.com 127.0.0.1www.youradexchange.com 127.0.0.1youradexchange.com 127.0.0.1youradexchange Now, save the file, and close Notepad. Next, to block Internet Explorer, download Process Blocker at this link (either the x86 version for 32-bit Windows, or the x64 version for 64-bit Windows): http://www.processblocker.com/download.html Install it, and reboot your computer. Then go to the Start menu, All Programs, Process Blocker, and click Configure Process Blocker. Now, when this opens up, all you need to do is click the checkbox that says Block following applications:, and click the Add button. If you're on 32-bit Windows, you'll want to add the following file: C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe If you're on 64-bit Windows, the path will be: C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe Once you put that in, click the checkbox that says Block other applications with identical CRC, and click OK. Then click OK again to permanently block Internet Explorer. This will not prevent it from trying to launch, but it will fail every time. This is the best I can do right now, and it has me mystified as well. Hopefully it helps someone. |
