I have recently found that html sitemaps really help my overall indexing on my site, particularly when it comes to deeper site pages. I also notice that often the sitemap text seems to be used in place of my page title when it is more applicable in some searches. What I am wondering is if it is an acceptable practice to use varied phrases in the html sitemap, individual page title tags and urls to target people who might be searching for page topics in different ways. For example I have a math answers site in which people come to ask and answer math questions. I am considering establishing category pages for different math divisions i.e. algebra, trigonometry, etc.

As part of the site navigation could I use the phrase "Algebra Questions" in anchor text and then for the same page use the phrase "Algebra Answers" in the html sitemap text and then maybe one or the other or some combination or an entirely different phrase, something like "algebra help" in the actual page title tag?

All of these terms produce very different search results of course but I believe the page applies to all 3 quite well. Does anyone know if any problem google would have with this type of practice?

Sure, you can use more than one target keyword in your onpage SEO but be wise in choosing and focus on 3-5 keywords max:

- do deep keyword research before deciding on which terms to target
- find out how many potential visitors and how much competition per keyword you are going to face.
- check your traffic logs to see if you have what search terms visitors have used to find you
- don't be afraid to test your keywords in practice, SEO is mostly science than a bit of art.

And yes, sitemaps seem to be a great option in your case since you seem to have lots of dynamic content.
