How can you attract more clients to your website?

I'm trying my best to advertise, but I need tips. Where is a good place to advertise? Google ads and Adsense is terrible. My website is a general forum. It's about almost anything. For example:

you need to write blog posts at least 3 times a week, google love fresh content.
join forums that are in your niche and advertise your blog there by answering question and contributing in general, don't spam though.
write articles and submit them to article directories with a link back to your blog.
