How simple is SEO for a computer novice?
Does SEO (Search Engine Optimization) get into the technical side of computers or get into concepts that would be too difficult for a complete computer novice to grasp? Are there any websites that offer free basic tutorials to learn it and can you recommend one? Does it require special software or anything?

Any information would be appreciated.
Thanks

Hi Stardust,

Short answer: No, SEO does not require any technical computer knowledge. It does, however, require some marketing understanding and even a little HTML programming knowledge would give you a great 'edge'.

Long answer: SEO isn't something you can learn in say, a week or a month. I've done SEO for years and still don't claim to know it all. It takes constant reading and staying up to date (as with any industry you want to work in).

Luckily, there are plenty of great websites out there that can help you learn 90% of what you need to know. The other 10% is pure creativity required on your part.

As you continue to learn the concepts of SEO, you may want to purchase some additional software that will help you, but there really isn't any that is required to get started.

SEO Definitely doesn't require any special computer expertise. As far as free tutorials go there are many. One that looks quite well done is http://seoforfreemoney.blogspot.com/

SEO does not require technical computer skills. Then again, this does not mean it is easy. It requires a lot of knowledge, which will only come from years of reading and reading. There are plenty of websites and forums to help you out. Do a Google search and join some...Ask any questions you have from the pros there!

Getting a basic understanding of SEO isn't that difficult. The title and description are very important issues when it come to SEO to deal with. After you have that down, you need to focus on page content, keywords, keyword phrases, anchored text, alt tags and then making sure that your web page code validates.

SEO takes lots of time and patience. Good results sometimes takes weeks or even months. While the information above pertains to on page SEO, there are many things which you can do for off page factors as well.
Building good backlinks, participating in forums and social networks, submitting to established article directories and general directories will help with the SEO process.

There are whitehat and blackhat techniques. Whitehat are approved by the search engines, while blackhat techniques can get your web site banned from the search engines.
If you want to build your website on a good foundation for the long haul, then I suggest take the whitehat road. I don't suggest that you follow anything which is blackhat, if you have a website that you value.

The Madmouse Blog at http://www.madmouseblog.com/ has many articles about SEO, blogger tips for better ethical blogging. I encourage you to visit and learn more about SEO and website promotion.
