what are some future technologies related to the internet?
more specifically, as part of my physics assignment i must describe the some possible future avenues for both VoIP (voice over internet protocol) and WiFi.

This is a difficult assignment indeed because you have to explore those stuff in terms of Physics.. the assignment would have been much easier if you are doing a computer-science assignment..

If you are doing a physics assignment on microprocessors, there are several ways to explore that field in terms of a physics assignment, especially with the new strides in the field of Graphene (carbon nanotubes) microprocessors..

But VOIP and WIFI in a physics assignment?!
It would be easier it is was a computer science assignment of which you can talk about WIFI devices that are resistance to interference, or the new strides of the new IEEE committee on faster WiFi that will hit a raw encoding rate of 1 gigabit per second (Gbps)..

VOIP and WIFI is largely dependent on the internet speed..
Regarding the quality of the voice, I am using Viper app on my smart phones, the quality of my calls would greatly increased if i have a better faster internet connection..
and of course, WIFI speed would be better if the global internet speed is faster..

You can also talk about the limitations of wireless communication (although at the moment, wireless internet is less about congestion and more about stagnation (as most people don't use wireless internet as often), the cost and the hesitation of wireless carriers in embracing newer technologies)..

At the moment, airwaves can only carry so many bits per hertz, but if VOIP is adopted in every mobile phone and every mobile device, I would guess wireless carriers would find no choice but to embrace new the technologies and dropping the price as part of competition amongst each other..

And if everyone is using the internet wirelessly, only then we can start to talk about signal congestion, and not enough airwaves bandwidth for day to day communications..

There has been an increasing interest in the application of terahertz (THz) waves to broadband wireless communications.. In particular, use of frequencies above 275 GHz is one of the strong concerns among radio scientists and engineers, because these frequency bands have not yet been allocated at specific active services, and there is a possibility to employ extremely large bandwidths for ultra-broadband wireless communications..

But that would shift the congestion to physical devices and machines (the physical computers that uses silicon based microprocessors, the use of copper telephone lines and two dimensional storage mediums)..

Again at the moment, much of the talk is about the cost.. sending a bit of information over the cellular airwaves costs a lot more money than it does to send that same bit over fiber or DSL.. How much more? It depends on if you are in a populated city or out in rural America (it also depends on if you are in America) as well as the type of network the bit is sent over (i.e., LTE, CDMA or HSPA)..
But broadly speaking it’s at least 200x more expensive to use cell networks according to analyst Chetan Sharma..

So I would suppose that you can orient your assignment towards better faster internet and using TETRAHERTZ spectrum of airwaves and microprocessors.. with more use of Optic cables, bioelectric 3D memory pads and graphene based microprocessors..

but it sounds more and more like computer science assignment than physics..
