or do they share those ads with other internet or smartphone users in your area?

And how to prevent it?

They serve up the ads to any other people who they think would be interested.

Why do you think they would only give them to you?

Install the following addons in your browser (providing you're not using the IE browser as these will conflict with it),Ghostery,Adblock Plus,DoNotTrackMe,and Disconnect for Google,Twitter,and Facebook. Also change your default seach engine from Google,Yahoo,AOL or Bing to StartPage or ixquick (these don't track you or record you ip address)
