SEO is twofold - on page and off page.
On page is about H1 headers, title tags, keyword density - making sure they tell search engines very clearly what your site is about.
Off page is backlinks. Quality backlinks from established sites in a related niche, with a good anchor text.
People often think SEO is about spam or blackhat tricks - it shouldn't be. It should be about making it very obvious to search engines what your site is about, so that it gets indexed for relevent keywords.
