Can the school see what I'm doing on their internet?
Say I am using my iPad and it is connected to the schools internet, can they see what I am doing on the internet?

Of course, if you're using a computer on their network, they can even look at files on your c: drive.

Yes, they can. When you connect to the Internet through your school, you aren't connecting directly. Anytime you connect to the Internet, you are actually connecting to a network interface that routes you to the Internet. Your school probably logs the websites your device visits and more than likely is set up to alert someone if you visit a suspicious site.

Also, Keith is wrong. For one thing, an iPad doesn't have a C:\, and second, that's just not how networking works. (You'd have to share those resources over the network.)

Yes, they can see. Most schools have WiFi internet, and it's very easy to monitor what sites you visit by going through the ruter logs. Same goes for public WiFi connection. If the iPad belongs to you then the only privacy protection is anonymous or private browsing.
