Can a external wireless lan be a substitute for ethernet?

I bought a blu-ray player with netflix, hulu apps but you need a ethernet to connect to the internet but would a external wireless Lan work?
I mean a external wireless lan adapter.
Why can't I use a external wireless lan adapter I thought the whole point of it was to allow a device without built in wifi to detect a internet connection without doing it manually. By the way my blu-ray dvd player requires ethernet you cannot connect without wires because of how it's made.

What you are looking for is a "wireless bridge". I have used what I think was an older version of this one that was wireless G (this one also does N):

Note that it needs to be powered, but besides a power brick it comes with a cable to power it from a USB port.

You probably initially need to connect a computer to it to configure wireless security. But after that your BluRay player should be able to automatically connect. Although, some players can be more automatic about connecting than others. I have a Samsung player that automatically connects and checks for updates, but my LG player seems to wait until I check network settings (don't actually need to set anything) then it automatically connects.

1. If your BR already has a wifi card built in, you just need to connect it to your router so you can have an internet connection

2. If your BR is not wifi ready (which usually means that you need to purchase an USB adapter that is specifically compatible with your BR) there's reason for the blue-ray to be wired and that is because with the wired connection it will deliver better and faster service from those apps you want to use.

I've just googled "rj45 wifi" and to my surprise there seems to be a Wifi adapter that has a an RJ45 (that's the network connector of a standard network cable) for about $10. It says that it works with lots of stuff, but I will leave it to you to research. I would not recommend wifi for such stuff as it is slower and crappier. You may not be able to get HD quality out of those netflix movies.

You need a wireless adapter which connects to the Ethernet port - an RJ45 adapter.
