Google chrome uses aspects of the core firefox program itself . they are really the same . Because firefox is open source google can copy it then sell it off as another product without any worries . But chrome will never be as fast as firefox or as popular among users and modders .

Get firefox 3.2 today Smile

Google Chrome is faster right now, but Firefox 3.1 in beta is supposed to be as fast, if not faster.
The strong point for Firefox is the add-ons. If you don't use add-ons then Chrome is ok, although you need to be careful, it's just recently released as beta, there are probably lots of vulnerabilities that may leave your computer at risk, until they go through a few rounds of patches, I wouldn't use it for my every-day browsing.

chrome is faster and will probably get faster than firefox for a while

there are a couple of reasons for this
1) chrome has multithreaded memory management. firefox is single threaded - it only runs one process at a time - chrome runs a thread for every tab you have. it also restarts the thread for every page. for this reason the longer firefox is running, it starts to use hundreds of MB of memory and will eventually cause you to restart it or it will bog down as it uses your hard drive to function

2) chrome has a completely rewritten javascript engine so it runs more quickly on interactive pages.

this won't make a difference unless you use javascript driven sites like gmail or yahoo new mail, but most sites use a lot of javascript.

i don't see either of these issues on the firefox 3.1 feature page.

That is going to depend on a few things. Unlike Firefox, each new tab in Google Chrome is like opening a whole new browser window, therefore if you open a lot of tabs Google Chrome could start to use a very large amount of memory and slow your computer down. Firefox will more than likely be faster if you like to open lots of tabs and don't have more than 1GB of RAM. Firefox beat Google Chrome in every one of the benchmarks listed here: http://www.wrensoft.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2789

From these benchmarks you can conclude that Firefox is slightly faster than Chrome when rendering Javascript. A growing number of websites now employ the use of Javascript in one way or another. The real loser in those benchmarks was IE. Firefox and Chrome were pretty much in a dead heat.

If you like Chrome's UI more, then use Chrome. If you like Firefox's UI more, then use Firefox. I don't think that you will see a significantly noticeable difference in speed on most websites.

It really depends on what you are looking for in a browser. Internet Explorer has been around for ages, and has the full support of Microsoft behind it. It is sleek and powerful, but on old(ish) computers that may slow you down a bit. Still, as the standard browser, you won't find many other negatives with it.
Internet Explorer 8 Beta 2: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/product...itnow.mspx

Mozilla FireFox is a highly customizable browser. New themes and gadgets are released every week, and this gives a personal feel to it when viewing websites. Although it slows the computer down, it isn't as bad as IE, though on a fast computer, you won't notice much of a difference between the two.
FireFox 3.0.3: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html

Other options available are Opera Browser. This browser offers very limited customization features (only a colour change in fact), but because of this gives very fast browsing. it doesn't require as many resources as IE or FF, but it isn't very fun to browse in something that looks as out-of-date as it does.
Opera 9.52: http://www.opera.com/download/

The final major browser is Apple Safari. In my opinion it is the fastest of the 4 browser and my personal favourite. Its style is based on the iTunes layout and it doesn't offer any customizability, but if you like iTunes, you'll love this browser. Its major downfall is the fact that it doesn't render (load) webpages very well. This can become very irritating while browsing so most people don't give it a second thought. It does run very fast (even on slow computers) and has the fastest startup time of all browsers. If you find that the pages you usually visit work fine on Safari, you won't have anything bad to say about it.
Safari 3.1.2: http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/s...ndows.html

A new introduction to the Browser market is Google Chrome, Google's first attempt at an internet browser. It is currently in a beta version, but it seems to be one of the fastest browsers out there. But, as it is still in beta, there are many stability and security problems with it. I would recommend against using it as your primary browser, for the moment at least, until the final release comes out.
Google Chrome 0.2.149 Beta: http://www.google.com/chrome/index.html?...ampaign=en

So it really depends on what kind of person you are and what type of computer you have. You can't go wrong with IE or FF, but under stress, they perform slowly, Opera is a boring looking browser but can run where the other two can't, Safari has problems with rendering many webpages and there are far too many security risks with Chrome, but is much the fastest of them all. I personally use all five of them (but IE and Safari are my main two). If Apple ever get the rendering process sorted, it would be my number 1 choice.

Hope that helps.
