Many who were raised Catholic in previous generations will remember that the Church was most well known for its radical priests fighting against poverty and nuclear proliferation.

These days, it is famous for child abuse and crazy stories such as this:

The Franciscan University of Steubenville in Ohio faces questions about its accreditation because of a course description that links homosexuality with crimes like murder, rape and robbery.

The university's social work program offers the course, called SWK 314 Deviant Behavior. The course description reads: "The behaviors that are primarily examined are murder, rape, robbery, prostitution, homosexuality, mental illness and drug use."

Members of a Franciscan University gay and lesbian alumni group on Facebook discovered the course description and have asked the school to change it.

"As a lesbian and as a psychological professional, I found a couple of things offensive," says Elizabeth Vermilyea, who graduated from Franciscan University in 1991 with a psychology degree. Today she's working on a doctorate and consults with mental health organizations. She objects to including both mental health and homosexuality in that list.

I'm sorry. What point are you trying to make?

Because the Catholic Church has always been strictly opposed to homosexuality, in principle. In that respect they have always been "conservative".

Now having a Catholic University considering dropping homosexuality from it's list of "deviant" behaviors seems like a liberalizing of their mindset, not the opposite.

How does anything you have written support your claim that they are becoming more conservative and therefore crazy.

Vermilyea likes to be politically correct. Deviant behavior does describe the mentally ill and homosexuals, no matter what she finds offensive.

No, not at all. The Church must always teach the truth in regards to morality. The purpose of the Church is to serve God by following His commandments and will. There will always be those that choose the world instead of the heavenly and will desire a God that serves them. The Church is instead the ark for humanity from such worldly nonsense and from the sin it supports. Just like the ark of Noah the Church protects those within from sin that will certainly lead to their destruction otherwise if they follow the world instead of the morality of the Church. The Franciscan University is one of the best Catholic institutions in the world teaching the morality of the Church and offering courses that will benefit all of humanity. It is not surprising that it is under attack from those who embrace sin and want it ignored or promoted. God bless!

In Christ
Fr. Joseph
