How do I get an internet connection?

I just got a dell laptop for school. When I'm at school, I am provided with an internet connection. But when I go home, I have no way of getting the internet. I have a desktop with internet connection, do I have to unplug it? Totally clueless!

Though the answer above may potentially solve some issues I don't think it will fix yours.

The answer would depend on a few things.

What kind of internet connection do you have at home? if it is a broadband connection (high speed dsl, cable, satalite) then you could get a Wireless router from best buy or walmart or almost anywhere anymore. Follow the directions that come with it and that will allow both computers on at the same time.

If you don't want to buy a router then you can simply plug the Ethernet cord (oversized phone cord) from the desktop in to your laptop then call your service provider for assistance from there.

If you are using Dial up then your best bet is to install the same ISP software on your laptop as you use on your desktop and set it up the same way then just plug into the phone line.

if your Dell is new it probably came with a wireless card installed. If you purchase a wireless router you'll be on the Internet in ten minutes.

Just make sure you have a a wireless card in the Dell.

The router shouldn't cost more than 50 bucks - if you look around you;ll get one for less.
