Bogus google chrome gave me a virus, I restored my system but?

I did click on it, and then I got a lot of pop ups that I never clicked on. Every time I tried to go into a page, it redirected me to an advertisement. I tried deleting everything that I knew it gave me and it made my computer act really funny. Made it shut down randomly or close my internet browser when I hadn't asked for it.
I did a system restore the next morning to take me back to the point before I ever downloaded it. Everything is working the way it was before but now I'm really scared.

I know virus's can steal your information and I'm scared it could've stolen mine or my mother's. Is there any way we can protect ourselves? Because now we don't know if we should be scared or not.
