What can I install/download to stop adds and unnecessary links popping up?

I don't know why this has happened but for the last few days annoying adds pop up on every single site i go on e.g right now there is an add flashing saying THIS IS NOT A JOKE IPHONES TO BE WON, I can click "Hide these adds" but i have to do it every different site i go on to and every day.
Even more annoyingly, whenever I type something into google, a lot of links come up for thing completely unrelated to my search, e.g there when i typed in "yahoo ask" to lead me to here, all the following came up before the YAHOO ANSWERS section:

So annoying, i use google chrome, please help me to get rid of this problem, I don't know why it has suddenly happened?

Hello Lima,

Download and install "Ccleaner":
http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner

Set it to remove:
Temp files.
Temporary Internet files.
Cookies.

Ensure you have at least one software firewall running.

Ensure you have at least one antivirus application enabled, update it and run a scan.

The following people do a Hosts file already configured with a blacklist for blocking bad websites and Ads. You would replace the default Windows Hosts file with this new one. They update it periodically, so you need to check their website about once a month for a new one.

However it cannot block Ads that are run using Flashplayer.
It will reduce the amount of Ads and this will have the effect that webpages will load more quickly because you then do not have to wait for the Ads on it to load,

To add onto Robert's answer. I highly suggest to also download adwcleaner and perform a quick scan. What this program does is that it removes any annoying ads that pops up, ads appearing on whatever you search up on Google, etc.

You have a malware running on your pc.

If you do have Malwarebytes installed on your computer, perform a quick scan and delete all the quarantine junk. If not, please install it now.
