Do you believe this quote to be true?
"If you do something good for someone and more than two people know about it, you did it for the wrong reasons"

No. It isn't your fault that many people know about something you did. If you care what those people think, then I'd say your reasoning was suspect, but until then the only thing that matters is your own motivation for doing something good--not other's efforts to celebrate or sabotage that effort.

If the quote was true then no one would be able to help others through charity. Furthermore, if you were a public scapegoat and the media was directed at you 24/7, then you would never be able to do any good in this life because people would know about it no matter what. If all the gossips in town didn't like you and you were constantly being mistrusted by the community, then your actions would be constantly monitored and therefore any act would be instantly gossipped and you would become a bad person for doing something good, thus playing right into the hands of the gossips simply by acting.

The moral significance of an act is not dependent on the public evaluation of an act. Humans are social animals so it is practically impossible to do any good deed without it being known.

Furthermore, if you are doing an act simply so that it will be "good" in a valid sense instead of simply doing the good deed regardless of how it becomes ratified, then you are guilty of egoistic reasoning. You've done good so that you can call yourself good instead of trying to help the other person regardless of how you come out with regard to moral authority.

Doing good has nothing to do with whether or not others know about the good deed. Only the do-gooder can know if their motivations are right. The quote is partly in reference to a bible scripture that tells of anonymous charity. If a person does good so that others can see it, and with the hope that the people will judge that person to be good, then the person doing good is either confused about moral right or is trying to improve their image.

Should I check to see if others are watching before diving in the water to save a drowning person? Will the observers determine the virtue of the act?

No resonation here in that quote...... Good deeds are good despite how many know. Acts of kindness boost the spirit of all those who know about them and even those who don`t..
