Does website URL matter in SEO?
Which weighs more .com or .info? I am joining an SEO contest and I have an entry with .info domain should this have a chance to win? This is about "Cebu SEO Contest" with my entry http://cebuseocontest.info/.

A .com is more popular and preferred in regards to the others. A .info is mainly to give more information to your visitors.

The more related a URL is to the theme of your site, the better.

Chance to win depends on your popularity and again your website popularity depends on your global appearance. If are visibly in your targeted region and also globally. Now, coming to domain .com and .info it is quite clear that .info website is meant only for information, so visitors seeking for rich source of information pertaining to certain topic will visit your site and also only when you search for info google and other search engine will display your website, search engine will never display your .info website otherwise. It is clear that .com sites are most popular.

Chances to win obviously depends on your online visibility.

In terms of weight, based on personal experience, .coms seem to be given preference over .infos, but there are a lot of high-ranking .info domains - I buy them all the time because they're cheap... and I have no problems getting & sustaining natural search engine traffic. While it's true that my .info domains are solely there to provide information (as the .info suggests) - you can have great rankings with these types of domains.

As far as winning the contest - that depends on what the criteria is, as has been stated previously.

A website's URL does matter for SEO. In Google (and I suspect Yahoo), your website's URL acts as inbound anchor text (as well as your page names), giving you almost automatic relevancy for keywords that are contained in the URL & page names. Now, that doesn't mean that you'll rank highly for the terms, it just gives you a significant advantage is all.

It's true that .COM is the most popular, but .INFO doesn't imply "giving information" or anything like that. It tends to be for people who wanted the .COM but found it was already taken.

.INFO also has a tendency to be associated with spammers and affiliate sites... so beware the image you'll convey.

To answer your question -- yes, Google and other search engines take this matter very seriously. The rationale is, when looking for clear indicators of your website's intent, the domain factors are important because domains for meaningful keywords are a precious commodity. If you are the owner of http://www.newyorkpetcare.com, that is a big vote of confidence for your ability to run a pet care business in New York. That also tells the search engines that you are unlikely to be a spammer, or a pornography dealer, or an affiliate selling selling dietary supplements, or any of the other sites that are often looked at with skepticism.

The amount of time that a domain has been registered is also a critical factor. If they see you've owned it for ten years, that helps the search engines to understand that you've been around for a while, you have authority, and that a lot of time and effort has gone into your reputation on this domain. They know it's something you take seriously.
