Is there a way to tweet someone privately?

Long story short, I followed a girl I like on twitter but she hasn't followed back, I know about the direct message or whatever, but I've been told you both need to be following each other.

Basically all I want to do is find a way to contact her on twitter so I can get talking to her, she doesn't know who I am, but I knew some of her friends and we live in the same area. Obviously I want to keep it between us and not make it so everyone else can see.

So is there a way I can send a tweet or something that only she can see?
