While your connected to that exact network, in theory yes some could access your phone remotely from the same network. However, to do so would have some significant hurdles to clear in order to do it, so in reality unlikely to happen.

When your connected to a different wifi network, say the one at your home, then nobody could access your phone via a wifi network you are no longer connected to.

While connected to a public network, your online activity (all of it) gets sent, and sometimes logged, to a big computer that a bunch of other people are connected to. In theory, although extremely difficult, somebody could hack this system and view all of it's content including current and recent internet activity. This internet activity includes any passwords you used, credit card numbers you entered, websites you've viewed, etc. Because they are not receiving this data straight from for your phone/laptop/whatever you have, they can not continue to hack you if you disconnect from this network. The only scenario in which they could is if you have ported forward your home router. If you don't know what that means, then trust me, you're safe once you leave whatever network you suspect you have been hacked on.

while you are connected to their network, they could see all your activity. Remember it is their network. It also depends on the wifi router. My current router emails me a log of all activity.
