Why doesn't my computer work?

Why doesn't my computer work?
My computer is pretty old well the windows software is. After the windows screen loads it goes to a black screen then stays there. The keyboard won't respond but the mouse stays lit.

It sounds to me like it is broken. If you have your original recovery media for the computer you may be able to reinstalll wahat was origianllay on there. Otherwise you should think about getting linux, (a much better operating system) for it. If you have access to a friends computer with a good internet connection you can download it here. http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/q...elease=lts
