"back linking" otherwise know as Private mesaging. is sending messages through link (no longer than 80 characters). that wil link multpile links at once. These are seen on sites like U-tube where you can have a link leading to two seperate video or the persons flicker/Tùmbler account.

Hi,

Backlinks are links on other websites that direct traffic back to your site. It is used for 2 purposes. SEO and Traffic generation.

For SEO, backlinks are like recommendations to search engines. Every backlink is a recommendation another website gives you. LIke recommendations, there are good backlinks from authority sites and bad backlinks from bad and spammy sites. Search Engines see that you have a lot of good backlinks (recommendations) means your site is trust worthy and informative which might help you rank higher on the search result page when someone searches for a keyword related to your website.

For Traffic Generation, if there are backlinks on other websites, when visitiors of those websites click on the link, they will be redirected to your page. Thus, increase your traffic and more awareness of your website for those who never heard of you before.

There are a lot of sites to learn about backlinks. Such as Searchenginewatch.com, seomoz.org and etc.

Tommy has the right idea. I'll just add a couple of things.

When the creators of Google wrote their PHD thesis is said basically, "We know how to find the best websites. They are the sites that the largest number of links from other sites." This seems obvious today, but back then existing search engines depended on human reviewers (DMOZ) or on how much a site owner was willing to pay for a high rank, and other flawed schemes.

It's true that not all backlinks (links from other websites/blogs leading to a page on your own site) are equally good. As stated, backlinks from "authority" sites are given the best "Link Quality" score. For instance, those can be domain names like educational sites "*.edu" or government sites "*.gov".

A good place to get training on the best strategies and tactics to get high value backlinks is Affilorama. Although the paid courses and free info there are aimed at Affiliate Marketers, the backlink advice applies to all Online Marketers.

Getting good backlinks is a lot of work and takes a lot of time. Using a good job portal, like eLance, you can find contractors in some countries who will do backlinking for you for $5 to $10 per hour.

Just as good backlinks will help your ranking in the search engines, bad backlinks will harm your ranking. Bad backlinks are those generated automatically by certain online services that promise you many backlinks for a price. Avoid all such backlinking schemes. Use only careful manual backlinking by an expert. It takes longer, but will do you much more good in the long run.

Hope this helps...
