In a QB driven league has the TE position become more of a skill position and the FB to a glorified guard?

Tight Ends are being used less and less as blockers and more as 3rd down recievers. Run first teams with great Defenses remain dominant in the playoffs but great Qbs get teams to the playoffs has this move made FB's an after thought and Tight Ends a key weapon?

I understand what's you're saying. But a good TE can both block and catch and a good FB can block, catch and pound out a couple of yards when he's needed. I don't see TEs being used less as blockers. Really good passing teams even have good blocking wide receivers. How a good team uses it's talent depends upon the talent they have available.

Saints have Jeremy Shockey at TE and he can block and catch. They also have Kyle Eckel who can do all the things a FB has always been called upon to do.

The league has come a long way since the FB was the best running back on the team though. I believe the last time a FB led the league in rushing was Jimmy Taylor for the Packers. I believe that was around 1964.

The TE position has changed little in 50 years. They were blockers more so in the past then they are now though. Rule changes in the last 15-20 years have made passing easier. To take advantage of the changes, teams have gone to four and five WR sets removing the FB and sometimes the TE. Great QBs do not get teams to the playoffs. Great teams get to the playoff. There have been many Super Bowl teams that have had mediocre or below average QBs.

Jim Taylor and Jim Brown played in the pre-I Formation era when the the Split T was used. The split T was more adaptable to giving FBs more touches. FBs as RBs began to decline as implementation of the I Formation increased.
