Why won't some of my programs recognize internet connection?

Internet Explorer recognizes my internet connection. AIM, limewire, and my Linksys WRT54G router will not detect an internet connection. If anyone has suggestions please leave them here or e-mail me at demarr_10@yahoo.com.

When you mean Internet explorer recognizes your connection, please make sure that IE isn't "Working Offline" by attempting to browse to a page you've never been to before. If your router isn't recognizing the connection, I don't really see how you could be connected, unless you take the router out from between you and the modem.

If it turned out to be that IE really wasn't online either, then the question would be, why isn't my router recognizing my connection, or why isn't my connection working. If you haven't already, try plugging the modem directly into your pc. If that resolves your problems with aim and limewire, then your problem is either a busted router (unlikely) or a route that needs proper configuration. If it is the latter, call your ISP and ask them what configurations their service needs to pass through the router, such as authentication protocols, etc.

If you find that you don't get a connection even when plugged in directly, I would still call your ISP. It could be their fault, it could be bad wiring, or it could be a bad modem.

Finally, if you find that Internet Explorer truly is connecting to the internet, and is able to download new web content, then I'm stumped. All I can tell you is check to see if they are configured to work through a proxy that no longer exists. Good luck!

I'm not 100% sure about this but I'll tell you what I think might be the answer:

If IE "sees" your internet connection, but the other applications don't, you may have a specific setting in your IE Options. Look at all of the option settings and write them down. Then go to each application and make sure that whatever options for connectivitiy you see there match your IE options. It could be something as simple as your IP Address.

When it comes to the router, you might want to contact their techincal support. I have very limited knowledge of how routers work. I've had mine working for 3 years now but I couldn't tell you how I got it to work....sorry.

If all else fails, look through the user manuals that comes with the software (if available) &/or contact techical support for each of the applications you are trying to configure.
