Former co-worker, still FB friend... Should I ask him out?

I'll try to keep it short:
Worked together in Jan '09.
I transferred to new store May '11.
May-Current I miss old gang.
Today I realize how much I REALLY miss them. Especially the one guy there!
We both have FB accounts, I have his phone number, never used it. Never talk much on FB other than work updates and whatnot.

What should I do? I know we'd have more in common if I let him know. Should I send him a message?
Gals: Have you done a similar thing? Fail? Why? Success?
Guys: Have you had someone do this to you? Good? No? Why?

Send him a FB message. Whenever I've done something like this, I always get a positive response from the guy. I've also had guys do it to me, and I'm always at least friendly even if I don't want to talk to them.
