It's very possible.

Some ships have satellite connections to the Internet, but they're dependent on weather conditions being favorable. Other ships have no internet connection, so it may be that you won't get a response until he reaches port.

he would need to get internet access with a satellite company and have the appropriate equipment on board the ship.
