Internet Connection Problem - Very Annoying?
Hi,
I have been using my wireless router internet connection (belkin54g) for months on end, but once upon a time it decided not to work. It still connects, but when I open Internet Explorer then it says 'Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage'-Windows' usual crap. But this is stupid as the computer has 'connected' to the network, and signal strength is 'excellent' for the belkin54g. So what the f*** is up???!

you may find out that unplugging your router & leaving it for a bit, and then powering it back up could work.

also navigate to http://192.168.2.1 & see if the words 'connected' appear in the top right hand side of the page. If not, enter your Admin password (default is blank) and see if there are any issues in there.

You have a lot of suggestions from others but none of them address the issue.

Changing browser, using a proxy, or addressing a LAN IP address will not address, let alone solve, the problem.

There are two probable causes, one being the router connection itself and the other being the wirless part of the connection.

If you shut off the modem and router and all pcs for at least 0.5 minutes you will clear up things that may well foul things up if this is the root cause. After the 0.5 minute of shut down, then turn on modem, wait at least 0.5 minutes, turn on router, and then turn on ONE pc that is connected to the router via a WIRED (not wireless connection; this pc must NOT have its wireless link, if it has one, active). Check for internet connection success.

If not successful, power down pc, router, and modem. Connect pc directly to modem. Turn on modem and 0.5 min later turn on pc and see if you have internet. If so, you have a bad router (and a firmware upgrade may fix it, go to router web site for firmware upgrade info and follow it to the letter). If you cannot access internet, contact your ISP with the pc connected to modem and work with them for a fix.

Once you are successful with pc connected to modem and after you have either replaced router or upgraded firmware to existing router, power down pc and modem and connect modem to router and router to pc. Turn on modem, then router 0.5 min later and pc 0.5 min later (wired only pc link to router). See if you have internet. If so then turn on another pc that has wireless link configured. If wired and wireless pcs work leave them run for several days to see if there is a failure later that affects only wireless or both wired and wireless. If both fail, it is likely a router problem and replacement is probably needed; if only wireless fails, you have a poor quality router firmware that affects ONLY wireless side and periodic reboot will fix it BUT it really needs a firmware fix that only the router maker can do.

I know this takes time but this is what is needed to resolve the matter.

Finally most home grade routers (like the one you have) exhibit this type of problem. They are cheap and not dependable. If you can live with reboots, then cheap is OK.
