Wireless internet vs a wired connection?
I now have a DSL internet connection instead of a Cable. The way I have my computers set up It would be easier and cheaper to use a wireless internet connection for my upstairs computer. The DSL modem MUST remain on the 1st floor. I tend to download a lot and view videos on youtube with that computer. I heard a wireless connection is slower so I am not sure if going wireless will be a good idea. Should I start drilling holes and run hundreds of yards of wire though my house for the added performance that I would get with the wired connection, or would it not be worth the hassle.

Wireless is slower then wired connections, but your Internet connection is still slower then both of them so it makes no difference which method you use when accessing the Internet.

The differences become obvious if you start to share data locally between your computers. Wired connections will be faster at transfering files between your PC's, streaming media etc. But remember the Internet will only go as fast as your Internet connection (which is hardly a quarter speed of an average Wireless connection).

With wireless, you have a limit of 54mbps (G) in good conditions (no walls, interference, etc.)

With cables you have a limit of 1000mbps.

Cable data transmission is much better

Well Wireless and Wired Internet are both fast, Wireless is a tad slower, as it is constantly sending signals throughout your house. I suggest the wireless, please don't make any holes in your house. Follow these tips to make it alot faster.

1. Make your wireless secured. This way only authorized people can access it (Not the whole neighborhood), and this will drastically speed up your computer.

2. Download Google Accelerator. This will speed up any internet connection, and even show you how long it took that page to load.

3. Once you got this wireless secured, and hooked up, go here: http://www.speedtest.net/ And tell me your results. Any computer can be happy hooked up, but as long as it meets your needs. Don't be tied down by a wire.
