I want to promote my website - HOW!?
OK, so I created a lovely little gem of a site; I write movie reviews (its even gone as far as writing for newspapers, so I'm no beginner)

I'm currently flitting around coffee shops, handing my 'business' card to random strangers in order to spread the word.
..but is there ANYTHING ELSE I can do to promote my site?

Any popular websites people view to find things?
Anything at all?

Heeeeelllllllp!

Well, first you need to submit it to search engines, like Google and Yahoo.

Next, you need to generate traffic.

Lastly, link your site to others.

That is the rudimentary method to promote your site.

The quickest way, however, is Adwords.

Like any other product it's Marketing. Yes, in the online business there are specific guidelines to follow. Make sure your Website follows the basic rules of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) in order to appear in good positions on Search engines like Yahoo, Google, Bing.. If you are not familiar with SEO read this intro on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Search_engine_optimization

Then Social Media Marketing is very important today. It's kind of like word of mouth but it can be spread much faster since most people are Online many hours of the day. Create a Twitter, Facebook, Google Plus account and share all your newest posts from your Website there. Also add an RSS feed so that interested people can be updated in real time.

If you want to invest some money in advertising that brings immediate traffic you can try to buy traffic from the Yahoo ads Network or Google Adsense or there are also other Adservers out there. After all those efforts, if you have an interesting Site, people will come back and new people will join.

That should do for the beginning.

Offer big discounts for the first few weeks to anyone who will pay for your reviews. If you don't get any takers then you will have to open your eyes and realise that you have had a lousy non money making idea.

Lets face it, there are hundreds of people offering movie reviews and why would anyone want to pay an unknown like you to write reviews? Face it you have entered a market that has no scope and is totally saturated. Stop wasting your money on this silly idea and get a job instead.

To be very honest you are wasting time roaming around public and distributing them business cards. We all are in digital era and for buy selling purposes people mostly reach businesses through facebook and google.
Rather then spending money on print media, I would suggest you to hire an SEO specialist so that he/she could help you out to moved your site up in required search engine.
Along with this spend some money from the business revenue on SEM( search engine marketing) or say paid marketing for your required keyword in google and on facebook.
facebook: expensive & low competitive
google: cheap then facebook but high competitive.

Thats all.

and describe your website. (for free and without user account!!)
If your stuff is good enough, it appears on their main page after a few hours.
