What breed(s) is my dog?

Last year around the end of July we got an 8 wk old puppy. The owner told us he was a chihuahua shitzu mix but he is definitely not one. He turns 1 sometime in May and we want to know his real breed. There's no use in contacting the original owners because I doubt my dad still has their number plus if they lied to us in the first place they probably wouldn't tell us his real breed.
He is mostly like a mixed breed (mutt).

Sorry for all the pics.

What breed or combination of breeds do you think he is based on these pics? From looking at pictures of purebreds, he looks like a Canaan Dog or Finnish Spitz or a mix of both.

BONUS QUESTION: Why did the owners lie to us? Was so they could sell him for more if they claimed he was a certain breed?

Canaan dogs and Finnish Spitz are not common breeds so he probably is not one of them. He is most likely a mixed breed possibly with some Corgi or Pomeranian or Beagle in him, They sell Breed Tests at Petsmart for $80 - $100 but these results are not 100% accurate. I CAN tell you he is 100% adorable. As to why people lie is beyond me.

Looks wag to big to be only mixed with those 2 breeds. Idk exactly what else he could be mixed with but you can get him tested at certain stores but hes an adorable dog.

As chrome347 said Canaan dogs and Finnish Spitz are not common dogs at all. He looks like he has some corgi in him from the shortness, coloration, and facial structure. He may have some chi and shtizu somewhere in his lineage, but most likely the BYB has no idea and just let his dogs breed unsupervised.

Maybe the owners didn't lie at all, they could have been told by someone else that he was a chihuahua shitzu mix. He might be a Shepherd mix.

If he came from the breeder, you'd presumably know one-half of what he is - mum!! It looks as if there could be Corgi there to me. Could be some Finnish Spitz there.

Whatever the situation here, he's not 'a breed' so the question of being able to sell him for more, for me, shouldn't apply. In fact these days with all the designer breeding going on BYBs often get more for these puppies than a reputable breeder would for A BREED!

All this mixing of breeds makes it impossible to say what any puppy might be ..... at least in the past, mutts usually came from the result of strays mating on the streets. Now it's all being done deliberately - ghastly situation.

Wow those are pretty obscure breeds so slim to NO chance either breed is in there. And "most likely" he is a mutt? LOL he IS a mutt there's no doubt about that. As to what breeds are in there - probably more than 2. I see German Shepherd and maybe Chow which would explain the reddish brown coat. Attached is a pic of that mix.

Why on earth would you buy a puppy from a backyard breeder? I hope they didn't charge you a lot for a mutt considering it surely wasn't altered or anything else. You could have adopted a puppy altered and everything else for just a couple hundred at any shelter. Do hope you've gotten your mutt neutered?
