Facebook has hundreds of people working on it. It's not a one-man job.

Facebook is now one of the leading social networking sites. True enough, there are a lot of people behind the site who are continuously working to maintain and improve its features. But it took them years to get to where they are now.

It's possible for you to create a site like Facebook. But of course, it may not be as big as Facebook itself.

Here's what you need to do:

1. Conceptualize the website yourself. You don't have to dwell on the technical details, such as the programming and databases. But think of the site in terms of user experience. What would be on each page, what would it look like, and how would it be used? It would help if you could sketch out a map of the pages and an outline of content and functionality for each page.

2. Purchase web hosting. Go for an established and reliable web host such as the ones recommended on http://buywebspacetoday.com/recommended-web-hosts/ and sign up for a shared hosting ("regular" hosting) plan for now, as it's the most affordable type of hosting and all you really need in the beginning. Once your site gets big, you can easily upgrade to a dedicated server or VPS.

3. Look for a web designer/developer to help you. If you choose freelance professionals, note that they may have specializations. You may have to hire a separate person for web design and for web programming. Or you could also choose to work with a company. http://elance.com/ but make sure you choose your designer/developer carefully as the quality varies. Be cautious about too-cheap bids, as they are often indicative of the quality of work.

If you don't have the budget to hire a designer, you may choose to do it yourself. Once you get your hosting, go to your control panel and look for Fantastico. Use this tool for a one-click install of Wordpress, a content management system that will allow you to create pages, write posts, add links, edit the design, and basically do a lot of stuff to create an awesome website.

Since you want a site like Facebook, you would need a content management system like Wordpress, Drupal, or Joomla. Fortunately, Fantastico can help you do one-click installs of content management systems.
