How do I factory reset my laptop?
I bought a Dell Latitude laptop about a year ago. I am having issues with the computer that I was told can be solved by a factory reset. I want to wipe EVERYTHING on the laptop. I meant EVERYTHING. I want it to be completely empty. Re installing the OS still leaves a windows.old file, and I don't want that. How do I wipe my entire hard drive and make it like it just came out of the box?
I am running WINDOWS 7

If you have Windows installation discs (when purchasing laptop), then simply delete existing partitions, create new ones and begin the installation process

This will wipe EVERYTHING on the laptop and you'll be able to install fresh copy of Windows

Windows 7 or 8 ??
When doing the recovery just do not save your files to back up.
Create the operating system recovery disc set or DVD and use them to reinstall W7 to the main hard drive partition drive C this puts it back to factory. Or after creating the recovery disc that no longer comes with new computers use the built in system recovery and when asked just do not back up or save your files.

Hi Alex,

I am Kaveri from the Dell Social Media Outreach team.

Please find the steps below to do PC restore or Factory restore.

As soon as you turn on the system tap F8 key 7-8 times to get the recovery option.
Step 1 : After getting to system recovery options click on 6th (last) option - 'dell data safe and emergency back-up' and wait for few seconds for next screen.
Step 2 : On next screen, click on 2nd option – ‘select other system and more options’.
Step 3 : On next screen, click on 2nd option – ‘restore my computer’.
Step 4 : On next screen highlight the option ‘factory image’ and then click on ‘next’.
Step 5 : On next screen click on 2nd option – ‘restore without preserving new and used files’.
Step 6 : Click on – ‘YES’

Note# "Please back up data to avoid data loss while the computer is restored back to Factory settings".

In case of any further assistance Please feel free to contact me directly by sending a reply to this blog.
We would recommend you do not post your private information on a public forum.

Thanks & Regards
KaveriD
