PS3 EXPERTS: PlayStation network games can I play them without an internet connection?

Basically for PlayStation Network games, you just need to download them and play them offline and possibly upload your score Online to see where you rank.

PlayStation 3 games however are already there on the disc when you buy them, but to play Online, you must have an internet connection.

Bothtypes typically grant you offline play, with the addition of Online play.

Certain games like MGS4 are better suited for Online play rather than offline.

Online only games, such as Socom and Warhawk, need an internet connection because they do not have a story mode, or offline game.

Only games that are online only (Socom and Warhawk) need an internet connection all the time. There may be more games that are online only, but none that I can think of at this moment.

I have a lot of PSN games, and I can play all of them without my PS3 being connected to the internet. My Socom and Warhawk games are on a disc, but I still need the internet connected if I want to play those games.

Which game are you specifically talking about and we can tell you whether it is an online only game?

Almost all the time unless you bought a single player game like Tekken or something.

DEPENDS ON WHAT GAME. LIKE SOCOM CONFRONTATION YOU WOULD NEED INTERNET CONNECTION. BUT OTHER GAMES DONT REQUIRE IT JUST TO DOWNLOAD THEM. MOST OF THE GAME THERE DONT REQUIRE IT.

Well...not for ALL of them...Like for some games it is a MUST to have internet connection...

One way to tell if your game needs this is just check the back of the game's cover...it should either say "Broadband Internet Required" or it wouldn't say anything....

Some games however are Online and Campaign...so you can play campaign withought a online connection....but for the Online game mode you would however need online....

The Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 are considered the "Gamers" consoles for a reason. The latest and greatest are going to be on these systems. Unfortunately this means you will need a persistent internet connection in order for most games to work properly. This isn't a game specific requirement but rather a requirement for the hardware. The PS3 system software needs to be updated periodically and there are game updates that resolve bugs and issues in the game software that just cannot be avoided. Some games may take advantage of the PS3 hardware in ways that they couldn't before and in order to unlock this functionality a system update will likely be required otherwise the game will not work.
