Internet connection problems?

I can get an internet connection but my local area connection has limited connectivity..i dont know what a local area connection is but i think it might be making my router not work. My router cannont be connected but i do have an internet connection..i cannot renew my ip address for some reason either..lol this is kinda a lot but any suggestions would be really helpful thanks
I have a dsl modem and right now it is directly connected to the modem...whenever i try to connect to my router it does not work but all the lights are on..i think it has something to do with my LAN..does that make sense?

What a confusing question! You need to provide more detail. Is your computer connected to the router using a network cable. or using a USB connection?

I'm confused how you can have an internet connection if your router isn't working as you claim.
