You don't sign up for anything.

From eBay:

When you place a bid, you enter the maximum amount you're willing to pay for the item. The seller and other bidders don't know your maximum bid.

We'll place bids on your behalf using the automatic bid increment amount, which is based on the current high bid. We'll bid only as much as necessary to make sure that you remain the high bidder, or to meet the reserve price, up to your maximum amount.

If another bidder places the same maximum bid or higher, we'll notify you so you can place another bid. Your maximum bid is kept confidential until it is exceeded by another bidder.

eBay only offers one bidding format. You enter in your max bid and eBay uses as much of the amount to keep you winning. It is real time, so as you enter in your max bid, you are involved in the auction. If you are talking about snipe bidding, that's a program facility (not eBays) where you can pre program your bidding to start at a given time. You still enter in your max bid amount but the program allows you to automatically start your bidding at a set time ie 30 seconds left on the auction. This service isn't free, it's a business that ime one has set up. Personally I don't understand snipe bidding. There is no "magic" or special ability with snipe bidding programs. Either your max bid that you entered is more than all the other bidders and you win, or it's not. It doesn't matter whether you entered in your max bid 4 days ago or with 30 seconds left on the auction. Your max bid is either more than everyone else's or it isn't. My advice, as a 10 year buyer with over 1500 purchases, is to find your item, read the listing carefully, check for any other similiar items so you can choose which one to bid on. Check the sellers history ie good sales record and high feedback. Ask any questions before you bid. Decide at the outset how much you want to or can afford to spend (and don't forget about shipping costs), enter that amount in as your max bid and then sit and wait to see if your bid is more than everyone else's. And there's one benefit as bidding early, if two people bid the same max amount, the person who bid first wins. I've won a few auctions this way against snipe bidders. Because they start to bid in the last seconds, my bid was lodged first so I win the item. Good luck
