In simple terms search engine optimsiation involves two things -

1. Link building
2. Content writing

A SEO specialist will usually do both of the these.

An SEO specialist is someone who understands how to write the website correctly, in a 'Search Engine Friendly' manner.

A Link Builder is someone who goes out and finds relevant and appropriate websites to link to yours.

Some people (myself included) do both. You do not need a 'Link Builder Specialist' - all you need is someone who can use his/her creativity and research to find the best websites to get lins from.

SEO comes in 2 flavours; Black Hat and White Hat, while your SEO Specialist must understand both, it is important that no Black Hat techniques are used.

SEO is not recket science, it just takes ongoing research, a lot of competitor analysis and a heck of a lot of time. Depending on the size of your website and the range of keywords/phrases and competition, it can be almost a full-time job.

One more thing about SEO is, cheap and effective do not exist, it's one or the other.

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the volume and quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via "natural" ("organic" or "algorithmic") search results. SEO may target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, and industry-specific vertical search engines. Also what people are really looking for and utilize HTML code to standards.

A good SEO company will also show you analytics and help you with ROI (return on investment) and or Conversions.

Getting 5000 hits a day and no sales is not worth as much s 50 hits and 50 sales.

Link Exchange helps build popularity. Done wrong it can cost you the position on google. The worse your SEO, the more you will need to be popular.

Google scores a site on over 100 different things.

Last year alone they made over 200 changes
