Without paying how do you get to the top of a search engine search? Top search on google, even the first three or all top 10. Ive seen the results. How is this done?

when you have a tooth ache, do you go to dentists school? or do you go to a dentist?

SEO is science and art - it takes time to learn.

here is my suggestion to you:
can you afford making a mistake that will get you banned from Google? SEO is not trial and error. some errors will get you banned and you will lose all the progress you made.

BTW,
even if you reach 1st position. if one of your competitors hires a good SEO company they will probably beat you.

There are other changes that have come about at Google Optimization; to keep the techies from reverse-engineering everything, they tend to make a sweeping set of changes rather than individual tweaks. Here are some changes that SEO people might want to consider, for Optimization:

•Lower keyword density
•Moving towards natural linking instead of all optimized terms
•Getting links from industry expert sites (easier if you have great content or great branding)

The single thing that many web Optimizer should take away from these changes is a better way of building a brand and a unique presence in ways other than search engines. Do you have a presence on social networking sites? Do people talk about your product or services on forums?

It’s caused many SEO to re-think PageRank as the be-all and end-all for web presence. This might wind up with unintended consequences, though…if PageRank is not seen as such a high priority anymore, there’s a good chance that devaluing PageRank might also take the steam out of paid linking.

I completely agree with the above answer. SEO is an art , Yeah, you can do it by yourself but without proper knowledge it's quite risky as well. Your website may get banned on search engines. SO i will suggest you to hire some SEO expert if you don't have proper SEO knowledge
