A question about status updates and privacy in Facebook?

I know there is an option to hide your status updates from certain people in FB through custom settings. So if you go onto someone's profile and dont see any status updates, BUT you see other "recent activity", could it be that they have status updates that are not visible to you?

yeah i'm sure that's possible if they hide their statuses from you or they may not have many statuses
