How to people get so many twitter followers?

Okay I joined twitter like 2 days ago and I only have 5 followers and my friend has over 2000, I'm not competing with her and obviously she's had her twitter account for way longer. I'm just wondering how people get so many followers in general, Is it just the way they tweet.

If you follow a lot of people then some may follow you back. Also if you put up your interests people with the same interests may follow you.

Well I'm not actually on twitter but if I was I would follow people with funny tweets and stuff but I'd also follow everyone I know. Also you could follow someone and hope they return the favour. Maybe when you meet a new friend automatically go "Are you on twitter? I'll follow you if you are" even though you'll probably never see them again. Also persuade your friends and family to join twitter too, your family will be sure to follow you after all they're family, right?
