They make money from it. The alternative would be to charge for using the site, game, etc.

The sites make money from it, its either you pay to use the site or you just keep seeing those ads.

If you are experiencing a surge of ads in the last 4 days the odds are it's something unique to your own computer, like an adware virus infection.

If you are getting things like searches ending up on cheap adverting pages, underlined text on pages that links to sales pages or more popup ad windows, you may need to employ some virus detection software.
