PS3 Internet Connection Problem?

I connected my PS3 to my computer using an ethernet cable. When I go to Network Settings and try the Internet Connection Test, it says Attempt to obtain IP address failed. My internet on my computer was working fine. What's wrong?

Also, I'm not very good with computers so you may have to give me a more detailed answer.

is your computer on a network? (multiple computers sharing the same connection) if it is you need to connect it to the computer that gets the internet connection correctly, or the router (the box connected to the main computer that sends the internet to other computers on the aforementioned network.)
