Internet Connection speed is only 10.0 Mbps?

Internet Connection speed is only 10.0 Mbps?
I have cable and normally my internet speed would be 100.0 Mbps.

On the bottom right corner of the taskbar, it shows two icons of my network connections.
One states: Internet Connection, Speed: 10.0 Mbps, Status: Connected
The other states: Local Area Connection, Speed: 100 Mbps, Status: Connected

I am assuming that my internet speed is running at 10.0 Mbps because it is not as fast as it normally would be. This has just been occurring around this month.

I am connected to my router (Netgear Wireless-N Router WNR2000).

What's causing the slow speed and are there any solutions?
My computer is connected with a cable modem and wireless router.

100 mbps? That is ridiculously fast. That is possible if you connect two computers directly together.

10.0mbps is definitely a strong standard Time Warner broadband connection

You're throwing me off cause you should only have one connection on the lower right hand corner unless you do some IP routing like I. Is your computer connected with a cable and with wireless?

First of all, unless you are connected to some kind of super fast internet (i.e. fiber optic), 10Mps is pretty good. Now, if your internet speed normally shows a faster connection, this may be dus to traffic on the internet choking your bandwidth, especially if you have cable internet. Sometimes, you can unplug your modem for about 30 to 60 seconds, then plug it back in. This will reset the connection, and may restore your faster speeds. If you have a router, unplug that also. Plug it back in about 30 seconds after you plug the modem back in, after all the lights on the front of the modem are looking normal. That's probably your best bet. Good luck!

First, let's clear the misconception that you can connect to an ISP at 100Mbps. Unless you have fiber optics and are paying over $100, you are not going to get those kind of speeds. Standard cable internet delivers between 20-30Mbps

The connection speed that you are talking about is the connection to your router. First try some speed test to see where you sit.

http://www.speedtest.net/

Here are some things to try:

1) For testing purposes, try connecting your computer directly to the cable modem. If you get fast speeds, then you got a router issue. If you still have slow speeds, you got a computer or ISP service issue.
2) Try rebooting your router.
3) Power cycle your modem.
4) Make sure your router has the latest firmware.
5) Try reinstalling your network card driver.
6) Try a new ethernet cable.

not really.. in a perfect world you would get all 100.. in reality, you might get 80-90.. if you tie the router to your computer. 10Mbps is actually fairly good...

but if you feel it's slow
1) check and see if something has moved, or is otherwise impeding the signal (either something physical, or something that emits waves)

2) spyware/virus check

3) could be some other program clogging your RAM

4) are you sure it's been the last month? or just the last 2 weeks? cable is dependant on other users, so maybe kids in the area who have school off are clogging up the internet with all their stuff..

100Mbps is the connection speed between your PC and Router.
10Mbps is your internet connection speed to the outside world. I am assuming it has always been this.
If in the next few days the speed hasn't risen to the speed you usually had, try contacting you Service Provider.

Techman is right. The 10/100 mbps speeds you see are NOT your internet speeds. It is the speed at which your computer is connected to your router. To see your true internet speeds, you would need to run an online test at a site like speedtest.net, or some place similar.

The icon internet connection is your router detected by the upnp (universal plug and play) service in your computer. if you double click on the icon you can do some port forwarding there plus some other stuff. the icon should not bother you at all, it just states that the computer knows there is a router between your internet and computer. in any case that's not your outside speed (net). to get rid of this icon you have to disable two services: "Universal Plug and Play Device Host" and "SSDP Discovery Service". that's all to it folks!
and yes, the existence of these service could slow down browsing alot since they are constantly checking what devices are plug n play on the network...
good luck
