do you need credit to use imessage?

I was trying to sent a message to my friend and it was blue, so I thought cool I have no credit but using iMessages so it should be ok. So I was just wondering do I need credit to sent iMessages?

Settings > messages > send as sms<-- make sure this is off. Then git on someone else's wifi or use your data (data rates may apply) and try it.

iMessage is internet based so you would have to have an internet connection (data/wifi) to be able to use it.
Texts of course are carrier based so just a signal on the phone would work.
