Don't worry Smile I'm sure he'll be ok. At least when you go to meet him, nothing will happen, because y'all will be in a busy environment.

I think that is nice of you to befriend him. That way he'll know someone when he starts school. I always go with this thought about doing things and that is whatever is my first thought in my head is the one i do. So if you feel its right, then go with that. You'll figure out as you go along if you don't want to do this.

While he's currently an unknown person to you, you may actually meet, get to know him and like him as a friend. Here's what I suggest in the short-term until school starts at least,

I say keep him on your FB friends list. You can always remove him after school starts back etc.

If talking to someone you don't know online makes you uncomfortable, you should either be honest and up front with them or limit your availability for them to chat with you.

Limiting availability on FB is simple.
FB chat has options that allow you to limit who can and can not see you ONLINE... it's a useful tool ... strongly suggest you have a play with the settings.
eg: you could add him to a friend list of ONLINE FRIENDS, then via FB chat use option to make you offline (not visible) to ONLINE FRIENDS. Once you get to know him better (via school), change your friend listing, so you can both chat on FB (if you want to of course).

At least this way, you're not alienating or causing any possible embarrassing/upsetting situations now/later for either of you.

BTW.... for your SAFETY... don't meet him before school starts... wait til you meet at school.
