It would be helpful to know what kind of business you have...

For instance:

If you are selling something online, or have an informational site for your customers, make sure that the site is appealing to the eye and is easy to follow.
Make sure, if there are things to order, that it is easy to see what they are getting and how much they will be charged.

If you have a store, create an atmosphere that your customer would feel comfortable in. Every business has a customer profile, who is coming to you for your service? If you are trying to appeal to upscale customers, add a little glam to your space, smooth finishes, leather chairs, ambient lighting... you get the picture.

If you have employees handling your customers face to face, make sure they are dressed appropriately to attract the right attention. Have you ever realized how the Apple store wants to attract tech savvy clients and they want to seem down to earth, so they dress their employees down and create a 'hipster' vibe. In a high fashion clothing store, make-up and nice clothes are a must.

It really all depends on what exactly your business is!

Take care to establish a voice that resonates with your audience. It's easy to get into autopilot when starting a site up, throwing up the standard pages with the standard pieces of blurb that could be from any number of sites.
If you want an audience to interact and to ultimately give you their attention, donations or volunteering time I think you've got to establish an overwhelming bond that will bring them back time and time again.
