How to send a direct message to someone on twitter?

I am trying to send one of those @messages to someone, but he won't show up in my list. can i just type his name in with the "@" symbol? Or do i need to get a message from him before i can message him? please help, thanks.

For direct messages, click on direct messages on the right side menu. Then type your message and hit send. For @replies, hover over their last post and hit the little grey arrow that shows up on the right. I don't think you can Direct message someone who doesn't follow you, but I'm not sure about that.
