why are people so drawn to facebook?
I'm 24 and I don't have a facebook, I did for a short while a few years back but got rid of it. It's everywhere these days and people complain that I don't have it. My reasons are:

- When I tried to get rid of it, it was a long process that took many repeated attempts. It was not straightforward to fully delete myself at all, and it made me think facebook is a deceitful, dishonest company that does not care about its users. The countless privacy scandals it has been involved in since then certainly back this up, I don't trust FB at all.

- I don't want people checking up on my life. I don't get why people are so eager to put their whole lives under a microscope. I know the reason my friends complain about my facebook absence, it's because I moved away from my home town a few years back and if I'm not on FB they can't check up on & judge my life. I know this frustrates them.

- Incriminating things can end up on the internet that once they're out there that's it, that's facebook's property. Who knows when something you do might end up on the internet and come back to bite you. I want the option to fuck up every now and then and not have a permanent record out there that employers, parents, even police etc. can snoop on.

- I have many good friends but I don't care what any of them are doing, don't want to know their "status updates" or whatever - why do people think others are interested in this inane stuff? There are also people who I'd rather not have any contact with but who I know would want to add me and try and communicate with me.

- It seems to me like a narcissists' playground full of insecure people who are there to make themselves look cool/impressive.

So, what's the reason it's so popular? Is facebook's popularity a measure of how voyeuristic & narcissistic the world has become?

People are drawn to facebook simply because there friends are on facebook and its free and easy to contact them. plus its one of the most commmon social sites. yeah you can get the wierdos on there that write statuses every 5 seconds want to talk to you all the time and people wanting to be your friend that youve never even heard of befor. but I put up with it dont add people you arnt atually friends with I have about 25 friends on facebook and thats because they really are my friends and not some random person i might say hi to every now and again.

Facebook itself can't do many things. People who use FB are the ones who create all these scandals etc. You can't criticize people who use it and how they use it , it's not right. There are many reasons why people are drawn to facebook. First of all, there are people who don't have real friends to hang out or real friends at all and they have a life on facebook a place where he can grab people's attention and not feel lonely, other people want to communicate with friends, relatives etc who live far for free, other people who blah blah blah ... and it goes on, there are many reasons why can people be drawn to fb. You can do whatever you want with your life, "let" others do what they want too . Someone wants to put his whole life under a microscope, so what ? Why would you care in the first place? It's his life! Maybe they want to show their photos to their relatives or to their friends or maybe they want to show off...the question is: Who cares?

I agree with you in one thing. It is not to be trusted, I hear all these people saying that their profile has been hacked . So it is good not to put personal data such as your tel no, your address and other personal info.(Believe me some stupid people do add these information)

I have a FB account too. In the very beginning when i had just created my FB account I was thinking as you are. One day I said, I am wasting my time thinking about this sh*t and from that day I didn't give a F**k about FB ( I only use it when I want to talk to my friends and when I am bored )

Hope it helped Smile
