Why does it cost so much to run Facebook?

In the section on Facebook "About ads on Facebook", they mention that it costs a billion dollars a year to run Facebook. Why does it cost so much?

Research how much it costs to put up a website, then calculate if millions of people are visiting that website, plus teams of programmers to fix problems and update it, computers to store all that information that constantly need upgraded, I can see it all adding up pretty quick... A billion does seems like a lot though.
